“That’s What I Knew” – 2014 Songwriting Competition Finalist (Folk/Americana)

We challenged ourselves to write each line of the verses with only 2 words… it was a lot of fun to write and it’s quite catchy.  I’ll get a recording posted someday.

That’s What I Knew
words and music by Johnny Harbour, Larry Wilson and Mark Herring

 V1
Black clouds
Cold rain
Long roads
Lost ways
Sad songs
Hard days
That’s what I knew
Till I found you

C1
That’s what I knew
That’s what I knew
Just dead-end roads
To stumble through
That’s what I knew
That’s what I knew
I’d lost my way
Till I found you

V2
Blue skies
Bright days
Open roads
High ways
Laughing songs
To get me through
That’s what I found
When I found you

C2

That’s what I knew
That’s what I knew
Just open roads
To sail on through
That’s what I knew
That’s what I knew
I found my way
When I found you
I found my way
When I found you
Just open roads
That’s when I knew

I Can Be The Rain
words and music by Mark Herring

I was thinkin just the other day
How you and I have grown in different ways
Yea, the contrast is beautiful, if you see it the right way
You’re the one who sticks straight to your plans
Me I find it hard to follow through
Like a child in a playground, I’ll be chasing something new

We ain’t found a problem that we can’t get around
With my head in the clouds and your feet on the ground
You can be the constant, I can be the change
You can bring a life that simple, I can bring the fame
You can be the pleasure, I can bring the pain
You can be all the sunshine, and I can be the rain
I can be the rain

I was thinkin just the other day
How we’re so different in the things we do
Yea what’s no big deal to me, can tend to bother you
You’re the one who likes to get things right
I’m OK if we just let it slide
Yea, we’ll work it out tomorrow, if it don’t get done tonight

But we ain’t found a problem that we can’t get around
With my head in the clouds and your feet on the ground
You can be the constant, I can be the change
You can bring a life that simple, I can bring the fame
You can be the pleasure, I can bring the pain
You can be all the sunshine, and I can be the rain
I can be the rain
I can be the rain falling down on a sunless day
I can wash all the blues away
Clean us up for a brand new day
You can be the constant, I can be the change
You can bring a life that simple, I can bring the fame
You can be the pleasure, I can bring the pain
You can be all the sunshine, and I can be the rain
I can be the rain

Holy Smoker’s – Bring It!

This song was custom written for Austin-made Holy Smoker’s BBQ sauce.

There are 2 recorded versions of the song:

1) “kick back version” an acoustic sing-along, suitable for head-bobbing

2) “crank it up version” a rock’n anthem with testosterone chants inspired by soccer fans, suitable for head-banging

Both versions share the same lyrics so pick your poison!

Holy Smoker’s – Bring It!
words and music by Johnny Mark Herring

Some people like it rolled up tight in taquitos
Some people like it on their morning eggs
I like to spread it on a fresh grilled burger
Some people like it with their chicken legs

So bring it! Yea we’re bringing the joy
Big time! With Holy Smoker’s Sauce
So bring it! Spreading BBQ joy
Big time! With Holy Smoker’s Sauce

Well I’ll admit that I’m stuck on the sauce
Can’t seem to put that bottle down
I think I’m done, I don’t need any more
Then pick it up when that plate comes around

So bring it! Yea we’re bringing the joy
Big time! With Holy Smoker’s Sauce
So bring it! Spreading BBQ joy
Big time! With Holy Smoker’s Sauce

Sauce On Purpose, Brought right to ya
Righteous Serving, Make you say Alleluia!

Some people like it topping off a burrito
Some people like it dipping fries the best
I like to spread it on a soft pork butt
Some people like it on their chicken breast

So bring it! Yea we’re bringing the joy
Big time! With Holy Smoker’s Sauce
So bring it! Spreading BBQ joy
Big time! With Holy Smoker’s Sauce

So bring it!

Turn Around Once

(unreleased)

Turn Around Once
words and music by Mark Herring

Familiar faces, familiar smile
And I watched you move across the room
Last time I saw you
Well it’d been a while
But you left way too soon
As time goes by we seem, to mellow out the past
And drift on back to familiar ground
And I can’t say just why I’m thinking like I am
Cause all you did back then
Was bring me down

Well you turn around once and you’ve seen it again
Why waste time where you’ve already been
Cause sooner or later, it’ll come right back to you, yea
If I could stop now I could turn it around
Head it on back to familiar ground
But as time goes by I see there’s nothing that I can do
So I’ll leave it up to you
I’ll leave it up to you

It can’t be easy when you’re looking through the glass
To close your eyes and pretend it’s gone
When something follows you, it can seem to last
Though it was years ago, it’s not that long
And something pulls even though, I hate to say it’s true
But confusion lies, even though it’s wrong
And I can’t say just why I’m feeling like I do
I’ve leaned to live this way, just to get along

Yea you turn around once and you’ve seen it again
Why waste time where you’ve already been
Cause sooner or later, it’ll come right back to you, yea
If I could stop now I could turn it around
Head it on back to familiar ground
But as time goes by I see there’s nothing that I can do

So I’ll leave it up to you… I know
I’ll leave it up to you, yea… I know
I leave it up to you

Change the Way I See Things

“Why do you look at the speck of sawdust in your brother’s eye and pay no attention to the plank in your own eye? How can you say to your brother, ‘Let me take the speck out of your eye,’ when all the time there is a plank in your own eye? You hypocrite, first take the plank out of your own eye, and then you will see clearly to remove the speck from your brother’s eye. – Jesus (Mathew 7:3-5, NIV)

Change the Way I See Things
words and music by Mark Herring

V1          Sometimes getting started, is the hardest part of my day
Other times it’s easy, usually turns out it’s Saturday
When I can take it nice and easy, let the sunrise win the race
Ain’t no point in rushing off, when I’ve got this time to stay

Ch          And change the way I see things
Change way I things, when I don’t like the things I see
Change the way I see things
And it might get just a little bit better
Or a whole lot better, for you and me

V2          When I change the way I see things, the things I look at change
Just because they’ve always been there
Doesn’t mean the focus has to stay the same
If I could know the bigger picture
And see what was on its way
I take these opportunities to get ready for the changes

Ch          And change the way I see things
Change way I things, when I don’t like the things I see
Change the way I see things
And it might get just a little bit better
Or things might be a whole lot better
Yea it might get just a little bit better
Or a whole lot better, for you and me

V3          When I’m disgusted with the world today
And I don’t want to hear no more
I tune out the media, turn off the news and kill the noise
Then I can hear my favorite music, playing in a different room
In not too long, I realize
My choices make my moods

Ch          And change the way I see things
Change way I things, when I don’t like the things I see
Change the way I see things
And it might get just a little bit better
Or things might be a whole lot better
Yea it might get just a little bit better
Or a whole lot better
Yea it might get just a little bit better or a whole lot better
For you and me

What Do You Think It’s Like (Over There)

What Do You Think It’s Like (Over There)
words and music by Mark Herring

What do you think it’s gonna be like over there
Imagine worlds like nothing we’ve known here
No more pain and no more lows, no goodbyes after hellos
What do you think it’s gonna be like over there

There’ll be mountains, there’ll be rivers
There’ll be faces of people that we’ve known
There’ll be music, and there’ll be laughter
and we’ll feel welcomed as we finally make it home
So what do you, think it’s like up there

What do you think it’s gonna be like over there
Imagine worlds with truth and justice there
Where no one steals to feed their greed, children live free from disease
What do you think it’s gonna be like over there

Well I see mountains, and I see rivers
and I see faces of people that I’ve known
I hear music, and I hear laughter
and I feel welcome like I’ve finally made it home
So what do you, think it’s like
Yea, what do you, think it’s like
What do you, think it’s like up there

Precious times we will remember
Hold each other close like I’ve never gone
Can’t wait to see you when you get here
Might be a while
But till then
I’ll keep you in a song

There’ll be music, there’ll be dancing
There’ll be faces of people that we all love
We’ll be singing, and we’ll be laughing
And we’ll be welcomed as we finally make it home

So what do you, think it’s like…

This Moment

(unreleased)

This Moment
words and music by Mark Herring

I didn’t expect to get the news today
Even though it’s no surprise, it shakes me anyway
And good intentions haunt my mind
Cause I put off till tomorrow, what I should have told you yesterday

I don’t want to miss this moment here with you
I wanna say the things I need to say, and do the things I need to do
It’s like a snapshot of a second, and then it’s through
I don’t want to miss this moment here with you

It’s like a sunset that fades
A prayer that softly ends, a touch that doesn’t stay
It’s come and gone before I know
Cause I was too distracted, by what doesn’t matter anyway

And I don’t want to miss this moment here with you
I wanna say the things I need to say, and do the things I need to do
It’s like a snapshot of a second, and then it’s through, yea
I don’t want to miss this moment here with you

I won’t close my eyes, so I don’t miss it
Gonna take in everything I can
I won’t take one single thing for granted
Cause we may never be here again

And I don’t want to miss this moment here with you
I’m gonna say the things I need to say, and do the things I need to do
It’s like a snapshot of a second, and then it’s through, yea
And I don’t want to miss this moment here
I don’t want to miss this moment
I don’t want to miss this moment here with you

This moment here with you

Story Of Our Lives (LGL)

GASongContestFinalistBadge asg-logo-1352013 Songwriting Competition 1st Place Winner (Inspirational) and International Finalist (top-15 of over 1600 writers)

Story Of Our Lives (LGL)
words and music by Mark Herring

We lay it down and send it out
We just don’t see how far it goes
Some lend a hand and some reach out
One life at a time, that’s how it grows

It’s the story of our lives
Together we reach out, and together we begin
Eventually we realize
That the part we had to play, made a difference in the end
As God writes the story of our lives

We each can give a little bit,
Alone it don’t add up to much
But faithfulness is all it takes
When we put it in God’s hands
It’s more than enough

It’s the story of our lives
Together we reach out, and together we begin
Eventually we realize
That the part we had to play, made a difference in the end

And we don’t know, just how this thing will end
But God is faithful, again and again

That’s the story of our lives
We never see it coming
But it flies by like the wind
Eventually we’ll realize
Through the good times and the bad
We’d do it all again

And that’s the story of our lives
Yea together we’ll reach out and together we begin
Eventually we realize
That the part we had to play, made a difference in the end
As God writes the story of our lives

That’s life giving life
That’s life giving life

Austin Traffic Song

This is a TEXAS COUNTRY song.  So if you don’t like that sort of thing… turn back now!

Otherwise, laugh on my friend.

Austin Traffic Song
words and music by Mark Herring

Traffic’s jacked, stacked, bumper to bumper
Roll past 35th, five miles an hour
Well I could, probably walk faster than this
Waste all my gas, appointments missed
Late for work again but what can I do
No matter where I go
There’s not a better route to choose

Because traffic is, the worst thing about Austin
Yea, traffic is, the worst thing about Austin

Well I could, probably walk faster than this
Waste all my gas, appointments missed
Late for work again but what can I do
No matter where I go
There’s not a better route to choose

Because traffic is, the worst thing about Austin
Yea, traffic is, the worst thing about Austin

Amy Smiles

Amy Smiles
words and music by Mark Herring

There you go with that far away look, the moon light’s in your eyes
I wish just once you would say what’s on your mind
It can’t be all that difficult, to fathom telling the truth
To clear the air and get down to the roots

When Amy smiles, she changes like the seasons
I’ve looked for her, but she’s just too hard to find
And you and I can’t see or know her reasons
It’s just too hard to see inside her mind

And there you go with that far away look in your eyes
You’d rather just say nothin, than to make up some new lies
And here I go explainin, cause you offer no excuse
In all these years I know, I still don’t know you

When Amy smiles, she changes like the seasons
I’ve looked for her, but she’s just too hard to find
And sometimes I think I’ll never know her reasons
It’s just too hard to get inside her mind
When Amy smiles, she changes like the seasons
I’ve looked for her, but she’s just too hard to find
And you and I can’t see or know her reasons
It’s just too hard to see inside her mind
