Fun with the SONG LIST:
THE ONLY THING BETWEEN US is a MAD ROUTINE, but if we REBUILD LOVE WITH TRUST, we’ll MAKE A BIG NOISE and enjoy this LONG RIDE through life.
This project went from mid 2016-2017 and all the songs were written in that time frame except Long Ride.
Here’s a little background about each:
THE ONLY THING BETWEEN US
Lyrically, the opening track contrasts what can go wrong in a relationship, with what matters most. It’s an adult perspective cultivated by real life experiences.
“Don’t want shame, don’t want neglect
Don’t want blame, let’s reconnect
The only thing I want between us, is love and happiness”
It starts the EP with an open, exposed vocal, then builds to full drums and electric guitars in the first chorus, allowing listeners to eeeaase into the wave.
MAKE A BIG NOISE
Now we switch gears into a quick rock tune with hints of CCR or Lynyrd Skynyrd and a blazing guitar solo (well… blazing for me). Somewhere I have a video made while recording the solo that I’ll post if I can find it.
Make A Big Noise is a cultural push-back on the idea that you need to be loud and obnoxious to get what you want. It’s a call out to all the big mouth protestors with megaphones and ridiculous signs.
“I got just what I need, don’t need to make a lot a noise”
It’s also a shout out to the responsible folks who do what they need to do to take care of their family.
More people should stop being envious of others and be thankful for what they have. We are blessed with such opportunity here that it blows my mind to see so many whiny complainers.
The title track is track #3 instead of first because it just felt right.
“Stepped off of the plane
Ready to start over
It’s been a year of thinking through
Everything I own thrown cross my shoulder”
This song is written from personal experience and observation. Everyone I’ve spoken with about this topic can identify with wanting to leave and start over.
“Try my faith, it’s been abused
Take my joy, it’s barely used”
Sometimes we’re in a rut and we’re not sure how to get unstuck. This song doesn’t offer solutions, but instead describes the desperate hope of misplaced trust that sometimes deceives us into thinking things are greener on the other side.
The Mad Routine could be a job, a situation that never seems to end, a pattern or habit that seems unbreakable.
What’s your mad routine?
REBUILD LOVE WITH TRUST
The first verse of this song comes from an anniversary card from my wife. She usually doesn’t write much in cards and the words were special.
“Together we have been each other’s heartbeat
Together we have been each other’s hands”
The tag line “I know I’m missing you” describes emotional distance just as much as physical separation. Every relationship has both.
It’s what we do in those times that matters most.
Long Ride had been around several years and I became interested in it again because of all the flooding and drama around Hurricane Harvey.
The song starts out:
“It’s gonna be a wet day, the clouds have pushed the sun away, I don’t wanna go outside, but I’m out in it anyway”
Long Ride isn’t really about rain, but instead a metaphor of our journey through life.
I had fun with the quirky intro guitar that repeats between sections. It was also a blast to record unique percussion elements.
Check out the backwards tambourine in verse 2 that plays off the sneaky-placed shaker. I made it by flipping the tambourine from side to side and then inverting the audio. What you get is an uncommon slurping sound… pretty fun!
If you listen closely you might also notice a cowbell on the outro guitar solo. I kept it on the down-low, ignoring the “more cowbell” mantra.
Special thanks to Elisabeth Herring for the cover photo, Sharon West for the background vocals, and Amy Herring for… well, just being awesome! No kidding, I don’t know what I’d do without you.
All sounds and artwork design by Mark Herring except rain by Hurricane Harvey & vocals by Sharon West & Elisabeth Herring.
